Forestiere Underground Gardens is one of Fresno’s most extraordinary landmarks. It is an underground labyrinth of hand-carved rooms, passageways, courtyards, and living gardens created over 40 years by Sicilian immigrant Baldassare Forestiere. Built entirely by hand using only simple farm tools, this 10-acre subterranean masterpiece features vaulted stone arches, natural skylights, and a remarkable collection of fruit trees and vines, many of which are still growing today up to 20 feet below the surface. Visitors can explore citrus trees, grapevines, and rare varieties planted in open-air chambers, all designed to stay naturally cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Recognized as a California Registered Historical Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Sites, Forestiere Underground Gardens is a one-of-a-kind cultural treasure and a must-see Fresno experience.
